WOMEN, VOICE, AND HISTORICAL FORM is part of Forget Us Not programming for 2026, which takes place between Vietnam, London, Dublin, Berlin, and online. The two chosen films are Surname Viet Given Name Nam (Trinh T. Minh-ha, US, 1989) and The Lady of Saigon (Jocelyne Saab, 1996). This screening module explores how women's identities are shaped and reimagined across wartime Vietnam and the Vietnamese diaspora. Critically probing the revolutionary subtext surrounding Vietnam's victory in the Vietnam War, as well as the enduring legacies of Western imperialism, the films navigate and challenge the patriarchal theater of armed conflicts and domestic governance through the voices of women.

As seminal practitioners of contemporary feminist cinema, Trinh T Minh-ha and Jocelyne Saab also exhibit radical experimentations by subverting the colonial gaze inherent to the ethnographic documentary form, while also embracing a fragmented construction of narratives and foregrounding storytelling as an agential practice of the historically marginalized.
