About the event

This December, we’re exploring Indonesia with Man Tiger by Eka Kurniawan, translated by Labodalih Sembiring. It’s a short, powerful read and an excellent introduction to Indonesian history and literature, blending myth, family drama, and a touch of magical realism. Kurniawan’s style has often been compared to literary greats like Salman Rushdie, Gabriel García Márquez, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Trigger warning: the novel contains dark themes, including domestic and gender violence.

🎄 As a Christmas treat, each attendee will receive a book gift!

📅 Date & Time: Saturday 14 December, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

📍 Venue: West London (Exact location will be shared upon registration)

About the Book

Set in a small coastal town, Man Tiger tells the story of Margio, a young man possessed by a supernatural white tiger. Through its unique blend of magical realism and raw exploration of family, violence, and revenge, Kurniawan weaves an unforgettable tale that captures the complexities of Indonesian culture and the human psyche.

Man Tiger is undeniably dark in places, with its raw portrayal of domestic violence, disillusioned youth, and fractured young love. It’s a story that doesn’t shy away from the struggles and tragedies of village life. Yet, Kurniawan masterfully balances this darkness with moments of joy, capturing life’s simple pleasures and unexpected delights that give the novel a surprising warmth and resilience.

Through Man Tiger, we get a window into the social and spiritual life of rural Java, where Islamic, Hindu-Buddhist, and animistic traditions coexist in daily life. The novel flows like a folktale, filled with humour, grit, and emotional depth.
