Yumi Hara's Groove Study + TAKU + DJ Marina Organ
Avant-rock trio Yumi Hara's Groove Study (Yumi Hara, Chris Cutler, Toshiaki Sudoh) play Cafe OTO, fusing Japanese scales, Gamelan rhythms and Canterbury-scene prog.
Time & Location
09 Sept 2026, 19:30 – 23:00
Cafe OTO, Fitzroy House, 18-22 Ashwin St, London E8 3DL, UK
About the event
Yumi Hara's Groove Study are an avant-rock trio: ex-Henry Cow drummer Chris Cutler; London-based Japanese composer, pianist and vocalist Yumi Hara, driving force of the Lindsay Cooper Songbook, who has collaborated extensively across the Canterbury, Rock in Opposition and Krautrock scenes; and ex-MELT-BANANA bassist Toshiaki Sudoh, a collaborator of Jim O'Rourke and Eiko Ishibashi (including her score for Drive My Car).
Expect complex rhythm and harmony paired with memorable melodies — Gamelan in 6, reggae in 7, West African polyrhythms in 10, Baroque fugue in 15 — fusing ever-changing odd metres, medieval modes and Japanese scales. PROG magazine called it 'incisive' and 'nothing short of majestic'.
With support from TAKU and DJ Marina Organ. £19 on the door, £18 via DICE, £15 for Cafe OTO members.
