Youngsook Choi and Sophie Seita – Scales of Breathing

Join us for Scales of Breathing, a participatory performance from artists Youngsook Choi and Sophie Seita, with Jaelee Kim and Rike Scheff

Can we reset our bodies as anchor points for sensorial reciprocity with other beings? When and where do we enter the common ground? How do we become porous?

Youngsook Choi, Sophie Seita and Rike Scheffler will stage the participatory performance Scales of Breathing: Score for Interspecies Collaboration, experimenting with breathing gestures that imagine and rehearse forms of communication and connection with more-than-human others. Inspired by the way earthworms collaborate with microbial species to turn soil into rich compost and to enact a strategic diapause (suspended engagement) when their environment is not nourishing enough, the audience is invited into a shared boundary-crossing space for practising collective body-ing, playful contamination, and communal refusal.

The performance, which features audience participation, will last 1 hour and be followed by a drinks reception with the opportunity to socialise.

Scales of Breathing was first commissioned and presented by the Seoul Museum of Art in November 2025, in collaboration with Jaelee Kim, and curated by Sungmin Lim. The project is supported by Goethe-Institut and Goldsmiths, University of London.

The event includes a performative conversation with a soundscape, followed by an opportunity to socialise. This is a seated event. Various seating options will be available including fold out chairs, office chairs, a sofa and a bench. All are welcome to join in a relaxed space and are free to come and go as they please. The lighting will be fixed with no sudden changes and microphone amplification will be used. There are disposable masks and hand sanitiser available.
