About the event
From San Francisco’s Chinatown to London’s Chinatown, an intergenerational and cross-cultural celebration of Asian performers is coming to the London Chinese Community Centre!
This special event brings together Asian performers from different generations, cultural backgrounds, and countries for an evening of rich and exciting exchange:
We begin with a screening of Chinatown Cha-Cha, a documentary by director Luka Yuanyuan Yang. The film follows a group of elderly Chinese American dancers from San Francisco’s Chinatown as they return to the stage and reconnect fragmented Chinese communities across the globe through dance.
After the screening, members of the Grant Avenue Follies—featured in the documentary—will join London-based Chinese swing dance group Kirin Swing for a live performance.
This will be followed by a special conversation featuring Kazuko Hohki—Japanese artist and founder of the legendary band Frank Chickens, who has been active in the UK for over 40 years. She will be joined by director Luka Yuanyuan Yang and members of the Grant Avenue Follies to share reflections on their experiences as Asian women performers navigating identities and artistic spaces in a foreign land.
After the talk, Luka Yuanyuan Yang will be signing copies of her new book Dance in Herland, a publication that expands on Chinatown Cha-Cha and five of her other short films about the Chinese diaspora, offering fresh narratives beyond the screen.
Finally, Kirin Swing(London-based Chinese swing dance community) will lead a dance workshop. Dance to the classic tune Chinatown, My Chinatown as we learn this cheerful routine together! This beginner-friendly session welcomes all to experience the joy of swing jazz.💃🏻
Don’t miss this unique chance to dance with us and celebrate stories of diaspora, resilience, and joy.
