About the event

'Proud Mary' is a love letter to an immigrant's ever-complex relationship with her own immigrant mother, recounting their journey from Korea to Canada. At her mum's funeral, Mary attempts to bridge the gap between Ummas (Korean mothers) and daughters across cultures, languages, eras, and egos. Charting the rites of passage for any child of an outsider to the western world, we celebrate the life of Mary's mum through Korean traditionalism, food, and the poor translation of a first generation immigrant. Ultimately, Mary longs to discover whether she ever succeeded in the age-old endeavour for any child - making Umma proud.
