About the event
Fashion, photography and the making of an East London creative life
MEMORY LAND: SPITALFIELDS
Before Spitalfields became a global destination, it was a neighbourhood of makers, artists, migrants, outsiders and independent creative lives.
For six days at House of Annetta, artist and designer Mei-Hui Liu opens up her archive to revisit the Spitalfields that shaped her practice at the turn of the millennium.
Through early photographs, garments, installation and personal stories, the exhibition traces Mei’s journey from sewing in the neighbourhood in the late 1990s to opening Victim Fashion Street nearby in 2001, while exploring the people, places and creative communities that surrounded her.
Part personal memory, part cultural portrait, Memory Land: Spitalfields looks at fashion not simply as clothing, but as a record of place, migration, friendship, reinvention and the changing life of East London.
House of Anetta
House of Annetta is a cybernetic building site in the former home of beekeeper, artist, activist and publisher Annetta Pedretti, a Huguenot terrace from 1705, in Spitalfields, East London. The property is owned by Stiftung Edith Maryon, a foundation established to remove land from market and make it available for social good. Through practising repair of the semi-derelict building, HOA CIC is iteratively developing a space for community learning and action on the ownership of land.

Donations
For the first time, we’ve added the option to make a donation in support of Mei-Hui, her practice and the care of her archive.
For many years, Mei has poured her energy into supporting artists, communities and creative culture, often without asking for anything in return. If you’re unable to attend but would still like to support the work, this is a simple way to be part of it.
Any contribution, however small, is deeply appreciated.
Opening hours: 12 PM-5 PM, Thursday 29 October - Tuesday 3 November
