About the event

A rare opportunity to see two of Japan's most exciting photographers: Kawada Kikuji and Iwane Ai.

Japan House London presents Kyotographie: Kawada Kikuji x Iwane Ai — officially titled Invisible — an exhibition pairing post-war pioneer Kawada Kikuji with contemporary photographer Iwane Ai in a powerful intergenerational dialogue that spans Hiroshima, Hawaii and the Tohoku region.

Directed by the team behind Kyoto's internationally acclaimed Kyotographie International Photography Festival, this marks the first time the two photographers have exhibited together.

The exhibition's title, Invisible, is taken from Kawada's own philosophy: by capturing the visible through photography, one also highlights what is not visible — including the photographer themselves.

Kawada Kikuji's work includes selections from Chizu and Los Caprichos (1968–1981). Iwane Ai's award-winning series Kipuka (2018) documents Japanese communities in Hawaii with ancestral ties to Fukushima. Also on view is A New River (2020), created in the Tohoku region during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Free admission. Open daily at Japan House London, 101–111 Kensington High Street.

3 June – 18 October 2026.
