What's Okonomiyaki?

Okonomiyaki is a beloved Japanese savoury pancake, made with finely shredded cabbage folded into a light, fluffy batter. The name comes from “Okonomi” (how you like it) and “Yaki” (grilled). It’s topped with things like meat or seafood, sweet-savory sauce, mayo, and bits like bonito flakes.

A true comfort food packed with flavour, Okonomiyaki has roots in early Japanese grilled dishes from the Muromachi period (1336–1573), with the modern styles we know today developing in Osaka and Hiroshima in the early 20th century. We'll make Osaka style Okonomiyaki this time.
