About the event

Welcome to The Dumpling Book Club! Our first book is Homeseeking by @Karissaychen, and we will be hosting a discussion with Karissa on Sunday 8 June, 3pm (BST).

Please join us if you've read the book, part way through, it's on your TBR pile, or you just think it sounds interesting!

Maria Lo, co-founder of DBC says 'Recently I’ve found myself asking when should I read this, where can I sit and lean into the gentle world? And I don’t always know but I know I want to keep these calm characters in their rich stories near by so it’s with me, almost all the time. In my gym bag, in the car, next to my bed, in the kitchen high chair, coffee table.. something about the writing makes me want to sit close and read when I can, sentences still fill my interest and soul."

"The story is so beautifully woven - its a story of family, love, friendship and surival. I was drawn in from the first page. It also a tells a history that I had very little knowledge of, and its a history that has shaped the world we live in today." Anna Sulan Masing, co-founder of DBC

The book club is a relaunch of sorts.

In 2023 Maria @thedumplingden_ got in touch with Anna Sulan to ask if she wanted to recommend fiction by Asian authors to do a small online book club and we had some lovely books! As with everything, time flies and life gets busy. But it is such a lovely idea and we wanted to resurrect it for 2025 - so here we are: The DBC!Almost every culture has a version of a dumpling, a ‘dumpling’ is open to interpretation, we all have favourites, we can be biased, there’s a genre for everyone. One dumpling is just for you, but the experience of eating - or even making - them is shared as they always come in multiples. Dumplings are a little like books. When we think of how dumplings relate to fiction books is that peoples stories in culture, heritage & history fill a dumpling. Much like a book, a lot is incased. We have defined ‘Asian’ in a wide sense, but there will probably be a focus on East and South East Asian writers as that is the community both Maria and Anna Sulan are a part of, and it will be only fiction books. Each book will have an online zoom event, with the author - and everyone is welcome, even if you’ve not finished, or even started the book! And, we want to encourage discussion online too - before and after the event, so there is a continued discussion that we can all keep coming back to, as books are forever.
