About the event
Society’s expectations, desires, and even resentments towards young people are constantly projected onto them, subjecting them to discipline, shaping their behaviour and, ultimately, suppressing them as they grow up.
In the juvenile detention centres, Yau Ching brings a camera into the lives of a group of “bad kids”. These rebellious teenagers, struggling to break free from the constraints imposed upon them, are finally given a temporary space in front of the camera where they can reclaim control over their bodies.
In Yau Ching‘s documentary We Are Alive壞孩子, imagery are turned into a lense through which we are able to see these bad kids beyond their labels, revealing a side of them that is at once genuine and vividly alive.
The screening will be followed by an online Q&A with director Yau Ching, moderated by Prof. Victor Fan (King’s College London).
