About the event
BCS Heritage Talk - The Forced Deportation of Chinese Seamen & special tribute to Leslie Cheung 張國榮
BCS not only does great events, one of the reason why we exist is to tell give a platform to and tell stories of our community.
Come join BCS for an engaging discussion on the forced deportation of Chinese seamen and a special tribute to the legendary Leslie Cheung 張國榮. This in-person event will be held at the Manchester Friends' Meeting House. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about important historical events and celebrate the life of a beloved icon.
Did you know in 1946, the British Government forcibly repatriated approx 2000 men and by 1953 they had deported 8300 Chinese Seamen, many of whom had travelled to England as part of the war effort of the 2nd world war and in fact fought beside the British in combat against the Nazis. After the war and the racial prejudice of the 'yellow peril' by the British Government, they were rounded up in boats at Liverpool and force back to Shanghai. There were also reports that some were left behind in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. Many of the Chinese Seaman who were deported had family in Liverpool and their young children who were left behind had no idea that their father had disappeared and forever.
We have invited the Children (in their 70s & 80s) and Grandchildren of the forced deported Chinese Seamen to talk about their experience and their stories. There will also be a Projector film by Hestor Yang & Q&A at the end.
In the mid interval, we have the famous & irresistible Matt Tam who will be singing Leslie Cheung 張國榮 songs. Did you know the 12th September is also the birthday of the famous Cantopop & actor Leslie Cheung who defined the music genre in the 1980s & 90s around Asia and his movies were box office including movies such as A Better Tomorrow (1986), A Chinese Ghost Story (1987) & Farewell my Concubine (1993).
Matt Tam, is an up & coming Hong Kong actor and singer having performed Hamilton at Y Theatre, the movie Every Waking Moment (2023), a regualt perfomer at Bitten Peach & as a guest singer at Occasian (2024) & CCCC (2024).
Also as with all BCS events, we have an after party Karaoke later in the evening. Details of this can be requested at the event.
