ESEA representation in the arts: how far have we come and where to next? 

A free panel discussion about the work contemporary artists are making to increase East/Southeast Asian representation (ESEA).

Join the Undone Theatre team as they discuss orientalism and the misrepresentation of ESEA cultures on stage. With theatre maker Joey Jepps (Kakilang Arts), musical director Amy Hsu (My Neighbour Totoro) and curator Hoyee Tse (London Metropolitan University). The panel will initiate a discussion about their artistic and curatorial practices, how their identities and backgrounds inform their work and their experiences of working within the UK arts sector.

A Japanese stewardess and a British pilot walk onto a plane. Twenty-five years later, their son Joey is thinking of ending things with his Italian boyfriend. Turning to his parents’ interracial relationship for guidance, he embarks on a journey to connect with his roots. But as Joey learns more about his family, a pattern begins to emerge: the notes of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly underscore a century of Asian misrepresentation, orientalism, and exoticisation.
