ANIME at the PCC! — Prince Charles Cinema Anime Season

ANIME at the PCC! is the Prince Charles Cinema's long-running anime strand, bringing Japanese animation classics back to the big screen in Leicester Square — many on 35mm or in new 4K restorations. All screenings are subtitled. Tickets are booked per individual film.

A future society where humans and robots co-exist. Amidst the chaos created by anti-robot factions, detective Shunsaku Ban and his sidekick Ken-ichi search for rebel scientist Dr. Laughton and his latest creation, a young girl named Tima.

Two teenagers share a profound, magical connection upon discovering they are swapping bodies. Things become even more complicated when the boy and girl decide to meet in person.

Angel's Egg (1985, 71 mins, 12A) — dir. Mamoru Oshii

In an underwater city, a young girl takes care of a large egg she holds carefully in her arms. A boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in his dream. Forty years after its original release, Anime Limited presents an all-new 4K restoration supervised by Oshii, in cinemas nationwide for the very first time. A collaboration between Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) and artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D).

Perfect Blue (1997, 81 mins, 18) — dir. Satoshi Kon

“The colour of illusion is perfect blue.” A young Japanese singer is encouraged by her agent to quit singing and pursue an acting career, beginning with a role in a murder mystery TV show.

Akira (1988, 125 mins, 15) — dir. Katsuhiro Ōtomo

Iconic and game-changing, AKIRA is the definitive anime masterpiece. Otomo's landmark cyberpunk classic obliterated the boundaries of Japanese animation and forced the world to look into the future. In 2019 Neo-Tokyo, biker gang leader Kaneda fights to free his friend Tetsuo after a regimen of extreme experimental procedures awakens a terrifying new power in him.

Millennium Actress (2001, 87 mins, PG) — dir. Satoshi Kon

Filmmaker Genya Tachibana begins a documentary about famed Japanese actress Chiyoko Fujiwara. Now reclusive in old age, Chiyoko warms to him and starts to relate her life story, her cinematic characters spanning eras from ancient Japan to the distant future.

Evangelion: Death (True)² + The End of Evangelion — Double Feature (1998, 156 mins, 15) — dir. Hideaki Anno

DEATH (TRUE)²: a recap of the first 24 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Fifteen years after the Second Impact, apathetic teen Shinji joins his father's group NERV to fight the Angels. THE END OF EVANGELION: the concurrent theatrical ending of the TV series, as Seele orders an all-out attack on NERV.
